If you are aware of the trends in church life, you no-doubt have come across the idea of the “Emerging church.” This is Jon Elliff, pastor of the Highland Park Baptist church and I want to help you take a moment today to think biblically about this recent trend in American Churches. Many times, when people talk about the “emerging church” they are referring simply to a style of church that attempts to connect with post-modern individuals. However, many of the leaders in this movement (see www.emergentvillage.com) have adopted not only the visible styles of postmodernity but also their core belief: there is no absolute truth. This notion, of course, is not only logically untenable, but it is in direct contradiction to words of Christ himself in John 14:6, “I am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the father but by me.” May we always be mindful and biblically discerning when we encounter popular fads – even if those fads have the word "church" in them!
