People are quick to quote 1 Cor. 8:1 – “Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies” in order to excuse their lack of interest in biblical knowledge or doctrine. Not only have they gotten that verse completely out of context, they have failed to remember many other passages of scripture that tell us to pursue knowledge: Col 1:9 “we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” In Romans 10 Paul describes the religiosity of the unsaved Jews by saying that they have “zeal, but not in accordance with knowledge.” In a day where our faith is measured only by how much zeal we have, let us not forget that true intimacy with God is the fruit of many hours of properly studying his Word for a true knowledge of Him.
